What a check engine light really means

The free code read at the parts store is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Here is the difference.

A code is data, not a verdict

P0171 does not mean 'replace the oxygen sensor.' It means the engine is running lean and the computer noticed. The cause could be a vacuum leak, a dirty mass airflow sensor, a weak fuel pump or an exhaust leak upstream of the sensor.

Solid light versus flashing light

A steady light means get it looked at soon. A flashing light means an active misfire dumping raw fuel into the catalytic converter — stop driving and call. That one turns into a four-figure repair fast.

What our diagnostic includes

Full module scan including freeze-frame data, live data review, a road test when the fault is drive-related, and a written explanation with photos of what we found.

Bone says: here's why

Why not just replace the part the code names? Because the code names a symptom. Guessing with your money is not diagnosis.
